I don't know about any US fly by night outfits. Probably they exist. Since all of them are selling insurance of a Mex company, it's Mex company that is holding all the keys, so to speak. What outfit you bought it from, will only matter if you are buying something more than a liability AND are going to fix your car (or yourself) in the US. Then you will need that US broker/seller to coordinate the paperwork (if they do this at all, can't say, never had to claim anything).
There are also - rarely - unreliable Mex insurers that suddenly go belly up while you're on the road. Then quality and reliability of the US broker won't matter.
Yes, reading fine print on the policy and familiarizing yourself with the coverage BEFORE you buy it, is highly recommended :)
I only have a liability. Whatever it will cost to fix my car - 300 pesos or a bag of rice - so it will be.
