Realities of Mexican insurance

Hi, just spent my first winter in Mazatlan Mexico, what a wonderful and healing experience. I am a 30 year retired Canadian Military Veteran who suffers from severe arthritic joint pain and PTSD, so winters in Canada were brutal.

This is the second Motor home my wife and I have owned, our first was a class C and we put over 176,000, on our current one, we already have 86,000 miles on it. Most of our traveling was in the summer months, with our grand children. Now that both of us are retired, we stay at Tres Amigos campground on Stone Island, simply the best one I ever stayed at and plan to winter there for the rest of our days.

Now to the meat of the matter, the realities of Mexican insurance, I had an accident, when I was storing my Motor home on Stone Island, simply it sank and the left hand corner came to rest against a brick wall, damaging the Pilot side window, cracking the windshield and because it bottomed out it also compromised the Air brake system on April 14, 2014. As per my policy I reported the accident to my insurance company ACE Serguos.

At first, they sent out an adjuster (Hugo Osuna), who then said he could not handle the claim, as he had never dealt with a Motor home before, he then told me his supervisor (Lupita Rodriguez in Monterey) would handle it. I sent her everything as requested, filled out forms, pictures of my license and information about my Canadian insurance company. My response from her after going back and forth for the last month, through a translator was that my deductible would be $500.00 and everything would be fine.

One of the concerns was getting an estimate of repair, to which after various e-mails to Lazy Days and other companies in Mazatlan trying to find someone to fix the Air brakes and glass. In the end through friends and the owner of the RV Park on Stone Island, this was resolved. Then Ace Serguos wanted me to pay for the repairs and they would reimburse me, to which I agreed to, but I wanted this in writing.

Further, they kept wanting more information about my Canadian insurance policy, to which I contacted my Canadian insurance representative, and he sent Ace Serguos an e-mail, because he was also puzzled as to why they wanted this information, as it had nothing to do with them. Last week I contacted ACE Serguos again to get an update and was transferred to another adjuster (Roberto Portilla), who again wanted more info on my Canadian insurance, I explained that the Canadian insurance does not cover my Motor home while it is in Mexico and that I had locally purchased insurance from Juan Fco Chong Robles (Axa) in Mazatlan.

Roberto Portilla on Friday sent me an e-mail saying that my claim had been denied because I did not maintain insurance from my home country, which makes no sense as my Motor home is registered for ten years in Mexico and that is where it is staying and as I stated before, my Canadian insurance does not cover any of my vehicles while they are in Mexico, this is why I bought Mexican insurance. Although, as with my car my Canadian insurance company would re-insure the Motor home once I crossed back into the US.

Therefore, this is a warning to all Canadian and American RVers, Ace Serguos does not cover you while you are in Mexico, simply put, they disallowed my claim on a stipulation that I cannot meet, as I know of no Canadian insurance company (probably the same for US citizens) that insures vehicles in Mexico.

Has anyone had tthis problem before, or is this something new?
