Not all states in the US, if any, require comprehensive coverage. Only 3rd party liability and medical is required and my guess is that it probably wouldn't satisfy their clause. And the OP would have needed comprehensive coverage for his claim.
Comprehensive is usually required by the bank if you have a loan.
I don't know which insurance I used before, but I do recall something about a requirement to keep your current insurance active.
