Mexico A Short History Of Los Rurales re: MIchoacan

I refuse to poison another thread with this asunto (subject)

Once again the US press and the wrong segment of the public is TRANSMOGRIFYING a vital integral part of the history of La Republica into "If It Bleeds It Leads". Los Rurales is a form of civil self defense force that has existed before George Washington rowed across the Potomac River, in one form or another.

To fear the RURALES is about as relevant as it would be to fear the NRA or local shooting club in your neighborhood in the EUA. Of course they do not having the training of the military (nor do the SSP or PFP). But they are wizened family members tired of "No Justicia" in Michoacan. This is the first state to rudely tell the gobernaion of the state and Mexico (DF) "Basta Ya!" we have had it up to our ears with judicial, police and legislative corruption!"

Is it a revolution? No! Is it an uprising? No! Is it specific hunting of the bad people? HELL YES. The same kind of people that populate, and prey upon the innocent in Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and the damned capitol of Mexico itself.

Will the Rurales affect tourists?

YES!

When they clear towns, cities, and regions it will be safer for all. Fewer thefts, robberies, and muggings.

But the only thing tourists will see will be checkpoints and perhaps a group transiting an area. This ain't Somalia. No "Technicals" RPG's brandishing of weapons. Rurales are anything but stupid, they cry for your business and your friendship.

The idea is to WORRY GOBERNACION. Get them off their fat butt, I have seen the problem from Tijuana to Tapachula, extortion in Cancun. Bad people looking for marks in downtown San Lucas and Zihuatenejo.

LOS Caballeros are a malignant offshoot of La Familia MICHOACANA. Like the Zetas were with cartel golfo. They picked on the wrong people. The citizenry formed rurales, ONCE AGAIN in the history of the country.

AT THIS MOMENT ten-thousand-to-one I would feel safer in centro Patzcuaro than I would between Skid I mean Squid Roe and The Giggling Marlin, or in downtown PV, or Cancun or Guadalajara, or Matehuala.

Read up a little on the history (It's way too brief and has quite a number of errors)

The word RURALES now means Del Campo, HICK, so they have monikered themselves with different names.

  • One of the main reasons we started RVing on the mainland instead of Baja was Davids' articles in RVers on line. Haven't met him yet though as when we went through Playa Azul in January 2009 he wasn't there.
  • Rving in Mexico is a very small niche market where many are ready to sell to developers. Even the "experts" who write books on the subject tell me the same thing.

We don't rely on rv parks and I doubt anyone in Mexico has gotten rich off of the concept of owning one either and that has come from the horse's mouth more than once. We had hoped at one time to open one but we realized from the get go it would be for fun and fellowship, not money.

As for American goods on the shelf, who needs them. I sure don't.

In terms of autodefensas, they were legalized for a reason. Their history goes back to the days of Lazaro Cardenas and the loss of jobs in the region after large haciendas were confiscated and Michoacaners headed to the U.S. All of this is nothing new.
  • If you believe EUA politicos then surely you can open wide and swallow what is offered down here. Culiacan has traditionally been a tough town -- a lot of boxers comes from there, like East Saint Louis.

Ask Michoacaneros if they approve of the rurales and you will hear the roar of "Asi! Orale, Andele, Hijole!"

Like my lengthy conversation with commandante Joaquin Baez of SSP near Petlatlan Guerrero. "What is the most dangerous part of Mex 200?"

    "Sadly, this one"

    He wasn't kidding.
  • Daveed: I have not sunk to selling condos or time shares!!! BTW: The Governor of Sinaloa claims that crime has dropped by 50% in his state since Chapo was taken away! Maybe they will be bullding RV parks in Culiacan! I was thinking of buying a bus and taking Gringos on tours to the Shrine for Jesus Malverde.

  • Very authentic. This is reality Moishe, all over Mexico. Turistas who go to Puerto Peñasco never really get to see "Mexico As It Is" primarily because Mexicanos do not wish to charge their guests with the labors of how things really work. My issue is this.

If enough dueños de los casasrondantes avoid Michoacan out of misunderstood fears, after a few years there will be far fewer facilities for RV'ers. Less USA goodies on the shelves of supermarkets, but most importantly there are no social safety nets here in Mexico. My joke of frugal living "Solo Tortillas Sal Y Musica" brings forth bitter laughter from friends and family.

IN FACT AS I WRITE THIS MICHOACAN IS FAR SAFER THAN SONORA, SINALOA, CHIHUAHUA, TAMAULIPAS, GUERRERO, and many other states. Durango, Sn Luis Potosi, the list goes on and on. Nuevo Leon. But because of hyperventilating hysteria a lot of people are going to go hungry. That isn't politics. Finding nowhere to park later on is not politics. This is cold, hard, brutal fact.

If a person REFUSES to learn about a subject they should keep silent about it. If a tourist wants to visit a border zone, use dollars, talk with Jose the bartender in English that is their privilege. But the spreading of alarmism, labeling or should I say mislabeling of things that affect RV'ers, and are disasters of the first magnitude for people scraping out a living serving RV'ers now that is something that gets my dander.

Closing of many RV parks political? The owner of El Pozo does not speak good English but he told me several years ago it would not take too big a disaster for him to decide to close and only open for Los Dias de Los Muertos, Navidad Y Semana Santa. There is very little cargo, profit, in operating an RV park.

In 11 days I plan on sleeping the whole way from ZLO to home. My son in law is a good enough driver for me to relax. I plan on stopping in Caleta de Campos and shop for groceries because it will be Martes and the next tianguis in La Mira comes on Sunday. I have not been in a Cessna Skynight in many years. Sadly Chuckles my friend says he will have an extra oxygen bottle on board in case I need it -- dang! I am going to do a PMA on both charging systems as a thank you in Manzanillo.

And Moishe I apologize for calling you in Spanish. I did not know what lada (area code) kept appearing on my cellular and I was convinced it was another "You can't pass this up for bien raices" in Huatulco or Pie de La Cuesta, tout. I was ready for war until you exclaimed in English "From RV Net"
  • It would appear a better use of the Rurales would be to organize voters into administering real change.
Sadly, so many are akin to the low informed voters of this country.
