Depends on what you need a phone for and how much you plan to use it. We got a prepaid Telcel phone and I think we put $200MX on it. We use it for calls in Mexico if needed though we rarely need a phone. We also got a Telcel Banda Ancha "stick" for our computer internet - we do not have or use any kind of "smart phone" as we do not see a need for one. If we have any need to call out of Mexico - or even some calls in Mexico - we can use Skype. There have been many posts each year on using the "banda ancha" in Mexico. You prepay minutes for so many GB of data use and then reload at an OXXO when needed. We keep the same Telcel devices from year to year but sometimes the SIM has expire and they have to put in a new one which changes our number - not a problem for us. Check the options on the Telcel website and try to find the previous posts going back over the years on this forum by searching for banda ancha.
