Mi Telcel

A friend of ours told me that he registered on Mi Telcel and during the summer months, he puts a few pesos on his cell or stick service to keep it active. That way, his service works the moment he enters Mexico. I do not, and the process of getting new sim cards is painful, inefficient, and slow. Sorry, I AM an impatient Yankee when I want to get to my Mexican destination.

I registered one phone, but it appears that I have to register each phone or Banda Ancha individually. Is it possible to access all my Telcel accounts on one place? I have not been able to register my Banda Ancha as it defaults to the cell phone number instead.

Perhaps if I put the "stick" sim in the cell phone and tried that.

Any thoughts?

  • I have both the banda ancha and a telcel. Making a cll back to Canda on the telcel seemed to cost about 60 cents a minute compared to just 25 cents a minute using my AT&T GoPhone. Does this sound right? If so, I will just use the telcel for internal mexico calls
  • After eight months I added data to my Telcel Banda Ancha stick and was surprised to find out that it worked. Did not need a new sim card. I only added 50 pesos at first to see if it would work and was surprised. Now have topped it up with 3GB. I did all this online and found it very easy to do. It was easier than going into a Telcel office or an OXXO.

  • A friend and I both put 200 pesos on our Telcel phones in the OXXO in Santa Ana when we came down at the end of October. We both got a text message from Telcel saying that our phones were charged in spanish BUT NEITHER ONE WORKED. We went to the big Telcel office in Guaymas the next day and spent about an hour while they did something to both phones and they have both worked fine since. I also put 500 pesos on my Banda Atcha in Santa Ana and it worked fine.
  • Paul,

We reactivated our phone and banda ancha in Guaymas - no problem. BUT - the phone was OK with the old SIM but had to get a new SIM for the banda ancha - not sure why. I think if the subscription to the number expires and they assign it to a new subscriber you can't get it again but if it remains unassigned you get the same number again. We have done nothing with Telcel from when we leave MX until we return to keep our accounts alive. We have found the people in the Telcel offices to be very helpful and knowledgeable - and if they are not they get someone who is. We always ask for an English speaker and we always get one. It does sound like you go to a Telcel office but have not gotten the right person. We are usually in and out in less than a half hour. Suggestion - two accounts - one for each of you - one for the phone and one for the banda ancha - then maybe you can keep them up online - have no idea as we have always upped our minutes at an OXXO - don't want to put a credit card online here - pay cash at OXXO - just being me. How's the beach?
  • I have both my Banda Ancha and my Telcel dumb phone on the same mitelcel site. When all I had was the phone my minutes went away when we did not renew in 60 days but I kept the same # and simply added time when we returned.

  • The day we leave Mexico in the spring we put 100 pesos on each of our phones, this time is good for two months (60 days). We understand that after that we have 180 days to re-activate the phones simply by going into the first OXXO or what ever and putting another 100 pesos on the phones and are good to go.

We leave near the end of March and cross back into Mexico in early November and have maintained the same phone number for about 6 years doing it that way. Of course, you lose the 100 pesos you put on in the spring (and any remaining balance you had) but to us it is worth it in order to keep the same numbers.

We don't do banda ancha so can't answer to that.
  • Not sure what You are doing then locate the nearest Telcel Office rather than an agency!
They will have an English speaking service clerk who will get You on the right path!
