Is it better to take I90 to South Dakota from Michigan or to go I80 across then head north at Omaha? Not sure what the drive around Chicago will be like and if it would be better to stay farther south to avoid it.

I would only drive through Chicago if I absolutely had to.

The last time I drove I-90 in Minn. it was very rough. May be fixed by now. It was 3 years ago.

I had to make several trips to Shriners Childrens Hospital in Chicago for my daughter's surgery, side note...any of you members that are Shriners, you are forever in my heart!Anyway, I too would avoid Chicago at all cost but the drive on I-94 through Indiana wasn't bad. It was I-94/I-80 when you get into Illinois. Traffic was pretty heavy, except at night but it wasn't really "overwhelming" as some of the other E-ways around Chicago, which you will never, ever be able to pay me enough money to ever drive again!!!!

I'm not sure where you are in MI. The last 2 time we rode our motorcycles to Sturgis (we stay at the Mt Rushmore KOA), we went through the UP. It is only 150ish more miles (based on starting in the Detroit area) and a much more pleasant experience. Chicago traffic is tough and even worse on motorcycles.BTW... I hope you are not planning on going the end of July thru the middle of August. If so, the rates get jacked during that time...Craig

When we made the trip we took I80 out to I380 in Iowa City North to US218 a four lane divided road to Charles City IA then US18 West to I29 and North to I90. We did overnights in Charles City IA and Mitchell SD to check out the "World's Only Corn Palace".
