hmm, we didnt see 70s-80s last May here on Lake Michigan. Maybe in south-east Michigan?
Snow wasn't gone until mid-June, garden wasn't in until 4th of July (had several frost mid-July even, zapped my tomatoes)

Geez Gordon, not sure where you live "on Lake Michigan", but I lived in the U.P. and the northern lower peninsula for about 25 years and don't recall anyone putting in their garden as late as July 4. Memorial day was usually the rule of thumb in Gaylord and that's the highest elevation in the LP.
To the OP: Stick to the west side of the lower peninsula. From Sleeping Bear Dunes down to South Haven you'll find beautiful blooming cherry and other fruit trees in May. The weather can vary, but frost during May is not common. 50's to 70's are the usual highs during that time. The closer you're to Lake Michigan the cooler the temps though. Being inland 10-20 miles will be warmer.
The Tulip Festival in Holland happens in May (May 7-14, 2016). The state park in Holland is nice too. If you like fresh asparagus you'll find plenty of it in May from SW Michigan up to Ludington.
