Million Dollar Hwy

Setting at Mesa Verde campground tonight thinking of heading to Montrose tomorrow on million dollar hwy. Anyone know how the weather is an will I have any problems pulling a 40 ft. toy hauler with a 3500 Gmc diesel?
  • We did it with our smaller truck and smaller trailer. We also tow Appalachia on every local trip we take. With that said, I didn't think twice while on 550. It wasn't the least concern. You'll be significantly longer and heavier, but with a more capable truck too.

If you have "toys" in the toy hauler, I would definitely recommend stopping in Silverton/Ouray and explore some of the off-road trails.
  • Search "Million Dollar Highway" on youtube and you can see it from someone's dashcam.
  • We drove from Montrose to Durango on the Million Dollar Highway in a 22'Sprinter Class B motorhome. We would not feel comfortable driving that route in a 40' toy hauler.
  • The subject of the Million Dollar Highway comes up fairly often. While most say they do not recommend it, there are always some who say no problem. Three high passes between Silverton and Ouray, narrow highway, no shoulders, and no guard rails. Google it, read about it, and decide for yourself.

I hope you are an experienced mountain driver with your rig on 550. Many of us don't recommend it with ANY RV - do a Search on here for the details as I am not going to go into it again. Just remember, you have no control out of the guy coming the other way taking his half out of the middle.
Good post. In another thread concerning that same route, I posted a similar reply and was immediately put down by someone who claimed taking that route was no big deal.

It is a beautiful drive though! ;)
  • Very curvy road with no guardrails; some folks are frightened by this sort of road. I'm not, but you have to decide if you would be. If you drive this route, take it slow and easy.
