Million dollar highway Colorado

I have taken Rt 550 from montrose to silver ton. Can anyone tell me if the part from silver ton to durango is a better scenic drive. Not sure I want to take the extra drive?
Thanks.
Dennis
  • Better? In whose eyes?. From Silverton there is only 2 ways to go - back the way you came or south to Durango! IMHO - the whole route from Ouray to Durango is one of the most scenic! Will watch no for other opinions.
  • I actually did like Silverton to Durango slightly more, but the whole route is spectacular. The descent into Durango is very cool. Hard to say one is "better" than the other though.
  • It is a beautiful drive, paralelling the Anemas river. It is a 2 lane secondary road, quite winding and very few guardrails. I have driven it several times with 35' MH and toad.
  • US 550 is one of the MOST scenic routes in Colorado. Going over the three passes gives breathtaking scenery and should be a must for anyone who is comfortable with mountain driving. We have gone several hundred miles out of our way JUST to drive it again. I"d describe the part you've already drive as
    "a pleasant drive' :)
    Good luck / Skip
  • If you have time to spend a couple extra days the train ride from Durango to Silverton is one of the best there is.
  • Ouray to Silverton is the more challenging and scenic segment.
  • Thanks for all the replies the next flex days I will have to decide what we will do. Thanks again Dennis
  • Where do you want to end up? Back in Montrose? A very nice loop is 550 down to Durango and then 160 to Cortez and north on 145 to Telluride to 62 to Ridgway and 550 back to Montrose.
