Mobile hot spots

The fly in the ointment with Koodo (which I have) is that any overage in data incurs a $20 per GIG extra charge. If you are grandfathered in it is less--but equally there is no warning about the overage.

I don't know the overage charges for Telus off the top of my head but I expect they are equally onerous.

I use over a gig a day.

I am enjoying sharing my iPhone cellular data with my iPad via wifi while camping this summer; my first experience with this. I have a $35 a month no long term contract deal with Koodoo, the bargain subsidiary of Telus, which has the best service in Alberta and BC. I only have 500 mb for the month but so far haven't come anywhere near using half of it since I hardly ever use data when not camping and am not into videos, just newspapers and forums. I like Koodoo because it has the Telus service at lower cost and much more sensible to me choices on monthly contracts so I could easily increase my data limit for camping months. Koodoo has no problem with hot spot sharing and the salesperson set it up for me (easy as pie). Very pleasant excellent service.

We checked. Our truck is a 2013. Not available yet. Thanks for the suggestion.

We have an AT&T hotspot that we bought in the US at WalMart, I haven't tried it but the SIM is removeable. I haven't tried it but pulling the SIM and putting in a Canadian SIM would probably work, worst case is that you could go to one of those kiosks in malls where they unlock phones would get it unlocked.

I went with AT&T because it's GSM, same technology as used by the majors in Canada so it would be compatible if I wanted to use it in Canada.

I did check at Amazon.com and they won't ship unlocked hotspots to Canada, but one of their partners would ship one from Asia for you, probably easier to hop across the border. Amazon.ca has some though,

Can you get a hotspot in your truck? I have one in mine and it's through Onstar...if you have that.

The hotspot was unlocked when I bought it. Everything Bell sells is locked to Bell. I just checked my Amazon account and I didn't order it from Amazon. Not sure now where I bought it from and all the paperwork is at home.

Sorry to pester you. When I went to bell they said that the hotspot would have to be Unlocked! They said they didn't know how to do that. From what you are saying downloading the software to the tablet must unlock it. By the way I just read in a review that someone used a straight talk Sim card and it worked and cheaper and more options than at&t in the states. Also I can't order from amazon and deliver to Canada. Guess I will have to look into this when we go south. Thanks for the info. Happy travels.

Bell set me up with a sim card and when the hotspot came in the mail I installed it, and then had to download the software from the att unite site onto my tablet.
now with the 2 sim cards, i just swap them out for the correct country and change one setting so the hotspot knows which carrier to look for and everything works, so far.
I think sim card was $10 from Bell and $5 from ATT.

So what did they do to activate the hotspot at bell?

No go with the Internet on the go. No Sim card. Guess I will have to use free hotspots. I will check into the at & t hotspot. More research! Thanks Brian
