Modesto Ca to San Diego which route to avoid LA traffic

I was thinking of taking 58 out of Bakersfield to 395 and then to 15 to SD. What do you think. I will be driving a car.

Depending on where in San Diego you're going and when, I would just head down the 405 and be done with it. If you're going to east SD, then either 58, (much longer) or take the 5 to 210 to 15

If this was an RV, thats a completely different story. But its just a car. Why spend the extra time.

The 405 freeway has been under construction for the past couple of years, adding carpool lanes to the area between I5 south towards the LAX airport. I never take that route if I can avoid it. WHen I leave the Van Nuys area, I would rather take I 5 south, then the 710 to the 405, and avoid a lot of LAX traffic.

You can google map the entire route, and look at the red (extra slow) yellow (25 - 45 MPH) and green along the route. You can change from "Current" to some day that you expect to travel. Saturday and Sunday are not options many times, and traffic can be as bad as rush hour, unless you are going through there pretty early in the morning.

I would also recommend the 58 east towards state highway 14, then south to highway 138, and east to I15. If you have internet access at that point, google the route to San Diego, and either take the 210 to 215, or take I 15 south all the way to San Diego. One freeway will be moving along faster than the other most days. I like I 15, because it is wider, but will not be much faster near rush hour. Once you reach state highway 91, it will get into really heavy traffic for a few miles, but will lighten up. Some of that area is speed limit of around 70 MPH, enjoy that short part.

Much of highway 14 is now 2 lane, so you are much less likely to get stuck behind a slow moving truck. Most of highway 395 from highway 58 south is one lane, with only a couple of passing areas. The part of 138 that I recommended is only 1 lane each way for a time, but it is also through or near scenic Wrightwood.

    Fred.
