Go up through Idaho into the Bitterroots.
Try Gallup, Moab, Salt Lake City to head north.
In Idaho, hit Craters of the Moon NP then Stanley Idaho for amazing views of the Sawtooths. From there, head north through the Bitterroots to Missoula, MT.
Or try a little further east and hit Ennis and Virginia City on your way to Butte.
Totally agree with traveling thru Idaho. We headed south from Kalispell on US93 last fall and discovered a lot of great sights on our way back to Colorado. But as the OP knows, Austin/Glacier is a long trip for only 2 weeks. We had 3 weeks and still had long, butt numbing days at times from Denver. Might also consider I25 straight north and do a side trip to Devils Tower and then pic up I90 to Montana which passes Little Big Horn N.M.
