Montana and Wyoming help

I am planning our summer vacation trip for 2018 - which will be two weeks long next July. We live in Austin, TX and want to visit Montana - especially Glacier National Park. It is a long haul from Austin. We have driven 500 mile days but more than two of those back to back is a little rough. So I am looking for ideas for one or two day stays in Wyoming and Montana on our way up to Glacier. We have visited Cheyenne, Cody, Tetons and Yellowstone before and would rather stop in places we haven't been before.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

At Glacier, on the east side, St. Mary has one rv park that gets decent reviews.. Johnson's RV Park. The campground inside Glacier might hold you, not sure.

I don't know where you are getting your reviews but on RV Park Reviews the St. Mary KOA gets better ratings than Johnson's in every category except price where they are substantially higher than anyone else but worth it if you want all the amenities. We spent six weeks there in 2015 and enjoyed it very much.

There is also Y Lazy R RV park down in East Glacier that gets slightly better reviews than Johnson's but is about 30 minutes drive from the east entrance to Glacier NP but closer to the Two Medicine area than St. Mary.

    X2

    Johnson's rating: 6.3 out of 81 ratings
KOA rating: 7.2 out of 147 reviews

Johnson beats the KOA only in price. In addition, the KOA has access to the St Mary River and Lower St Mary Lake. Our dogs enjoy the river.

On the other hand, we do try to eat at least one dinner at Johnson's.

  • first of all, make reservations NOW for Glacier.

We live down near Canyon Lake and go up to WY every year, so we have used various routes to get there. If you're not going to Yellowstone, you can take TX 83 or 385.. 83 is probly smoother than 385 in CO, but we still like that route...not much traffic and nice little towns.
When you get to NE, take 26 west over to I 25. If you want to see some impressive wagon wheel tracks, look for a sign pointing to the site in Guernsey..it's about a mile north of town, easy to see with a short walk along the tracks, etc.
    Take I 25 up to I 90 and MT.
There is a good rv park in Buffalo called the Indian RV park. There is a small rv park in Ranchester, just north of Sheridan. Plain and simple, in town. http://lazyrcampground.com/
This is a good spot to stop for a couple nights if you want to take your toad and drive up to Burgess Junction in the BigHorns..and also go see the Medicine Wheel a few miles west of the Junction.
Can't help you with an rv park between WY and Glacier...when we went several years ago, we saw several little mom and pop rv parks along 89 in MT.
  • Don't miss the town graveyards in Virginia City...the city one and Boot Hill.
  • Go up through Idaho into the Bitterroots.
Try Gallup, Moab, Salt Lake City to head north.
In Idaho, hit Craters of the Moon NP then Stanley Idaho for amazing views of the Sawtooths. From there, head north through the Bitterroots to Missoula, MT.

Or try a little further east and hit Ennis and Virginia City on your way to Butte.
