Monument Valley Indian Route 59 AZ

Looking to go from Gallup to to Monument Valley. Whats the road surface like on Indian 59 - streetview makes me think it could be rough? It would shave about 30 miles off the 191 or 491 alternatives but its not worth it if we're going to get bounced around.

  • I did this trip in reverse in January. Monument Valley to Kayenta, to Many Farms and Chinle . Past Hubbell Trading Post and Window Rock to Gallup with no problems at all. Good roads all the way. No problems!

If you're stopping for a tour, checkout Navajo guide Ron Atine for a back country tour!
  • Took that leg about 3 years ago. Good road, pretty flat, no traffic. Surface a little worn, lots of tar strips, but it was fine in my 36' pusher towing a CRV.
  • It doesn't look too bad in GoogleEarth. Last time we traveled on the rez, it was on BIA/N 13 from Shiprock over to Lukachukai (and then to Chinle). The road surface was very good and plenty wide, but not recommended for RVs because the pass was incredibly steep (16% for miles).
