Mountain Home to McCall Idaho

We'll be heading to McCall for the first time in the near future, and the directions I get from Google are to take Rte 55 from Boise; alternate directions are to take US 95, but that's much farther west, the long way around for us (coming from east of Boise). Any concerns I need to have for Rte 55? We will be towing our 27' TT.
  • Thanks, 2gypsies! We do have that directory, but I hadn't checked it yet.
  • Just north of Boise you'll encounter Horseshoe Bend Hill. Northbound you have a descent from the summit of 7% for 5 miles and then 3/4 mile of 5% with 4 runaway truck ramps about a mile apart as you descent towards Horseshoe Bend. Speed is 35 mph. (This is taken from the Mountain Directory for Truckers & RVers.)

We've driven this route many times and find it to be just fine but wanted to give you a 'heads up'. Have a great trip. It's a beautiful drive to McCall.
  • Thanks, everyone! Sounds very do-able. Looking forward to the ride and even more to the stay there!
  • We haul our trailer up there all the time. Some curvy sections, and you might want to be aware of waiting for traffic if you are crossing the bridge above Smiths Ferry. It's pretty narrow. No problem at all as long as you don't meet someone else who is wide coming the other direction. It is a very short bridge, however.

Have fun. It's a beautiful area.
  • We love McCall. We always go up 55 from Boise in our 45 foot prevost bus towing a Jeep Wrangler four door. Beautiful ride up much of it along side the Payette river. Some parts of 55 are a little curvy and tight but we have never had a problem.
