- Reader1ExplorerIt does not matter whether it was a Democratic or Republican decision to return the name to the original Athabaskan name of Denali. It was the right thing to do. President McKinley never visited Alaska. It was originally called McKinley by a gold prospector during the time of McKinley's run for President. The Ohio Delegation was successful in changing it to honor McKinley. No disrespect to President McKinley but it is time to return the name to honor the Athabaskan people. And... yes I am an Ohioan.

Some say Mt. Rainier, some say just Rainier.
Some say Mt. Denali, some say just Denali although the latter is more romantic. - jrpExplorerAlmost everyone but Ohioans has been calling it Denali for 30 yrs. In 1982 on my 3rd attempt, I finally stood on its summit. Once you've been there, Denali "the great one" is the appropriate name.

It's not Mt. Denali, though - simply Denali. Always has been here, great to see it official now. - Dog_FolksExplorer

McKinley no more: America's tallest peak to be renamed Denali
Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, said in an email that "Denali belongs to Alaska and its citizens. The naming rights already went to ancestors of the Alaska Native people, like those of my wife’s family. For decades, Alaskans and members of our congressional delegation have been fighting for Denali to be recognized by the federal government by its true name. I’m gratified that the president respected this.” - kyle86ExplorerGlad he is focusing on the important decisions. Celebrate with a round of golf?
