Thank you.
Moisheh, I deal in REALITY not ought-to-be's...
You ought to know that now after a half hour telephone call from you. The key is to be aware, know viable options that WORK and are simple and easy to implement and observe.
THINK about what a car theft involves from the thief's point of view.
The car can NEVER be driven on the highway. PFP retens new have internet connected VIN database checkers. Connected to DF. THOUSANDS of chocolates have been confiscated wearing legal state license plates but having phony importation and nationalization paperwork. The days of robbing cars and buying phony ownership certificates are OVER! Got it? These databases contain the VIN of the robbed car. VINS that do not match or are falsified means the driver goes to jail and the car is impounded at the corralon federal FOREVER. When I pass through a reten I see cars parked waiting to be towed. The system is not a joke.
Cars are robbed for two reasons. To be used in rural offroad settings where police do not have access to verify documents or plates. The second is FOR CHOP SHOPS. New engines, transmissions, seats, glass whatever to be sold on the black markets in all major cities.
READ what victims of car robbery have to say. They have been through it. They know the ropes entirely too intimately.
I have got news for you Moisheh. ONE SINGLE VICTIM of a lost car and subsequent nightmare of government bureaucracy rains on your good news parade a hundred times more intensely than a single one of my suggestions as to how to go about PREVENTING the problem in it's entirety, easily.
Who gives a good goddamn WHAT KIND OF WEAPON is used in the robbery? It can be a saturday night special .25 caliber. Are a few 7.62 rounds WORSE than a single close distance .25 caliber round? PREVENT THE SHOOTING. Comply with the robber's orders. Then have a car stall down the road, where it can be recovered by you or the cops.
Car robbery, carjacking is RARE. But the consequences of a disappeared car are a nightmare. Is this too hard to understand?
Having a good SURPLUS LINE BROKER representing you is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to unsnarl the red tape of even a recovered (by the cops) stalled car. A capable Surplus Line Broker AGGRESSIVELY keeps intimate contact with their underwriter, and works with them. The SINGLE Surplus Line Broker that has PROVEN themselves in multiple cases of unrecovered car theft is LEWIS & LEWIS insurance. They have CLEARED multiple cases with HACIENDA the folks that enforce the TIP and car bonding regulations.
You can keep your NO BAD DAYS blinders on Moisheh. Please do not recommend it to others. A few simple steps can eliminate potential nightmares. I must live the few simple steps prevention day-in-and-day out. It is so easy it makes me shake my head. But a few folks who do not live down here keep coming up with unworkable ideas. I try my level best to make things simple and secure. Not have punks run around with TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR automatic weapons who spring from the bushes on a rural road.
More bad news. Sicarios collect extortion money. But not from tourists. I have no figures but the income from extortion to stolen cars "revenue" must be like ten thousand to one maybe a million to one. It too makes me shake my head. Because it does not involve tourists I make no mention of it. Extortion hazards have no place on this or any other travel forum.
Again just to clarify for the timid CAR THEFT IS VERY UNCOMMON. Carjacking of an extraneous vehicle is EXTREMELY RARE. It is not so rare with certain models of nacional vehicles.
But the CONSEQUENCES of losing a car are a freakin' nightmare. Even for a car stolen from a parking place. Get the picture? The pointing of guns and losing a car on the highway incurs no more nightmare paperwork and banning of further importation than a simple snatching of a car in a supermarket parking lot. Think before you reply. Car theft artists would rather snatch a car than use a firearm to steal it. Having the keys is an important objective.
Giving a thief a 500 dollar anti hijack "spotter" in addition to the vehicle is not in my opinion, the smartest investment a car owner can make.
If you want to concentrate your efforts on making tourism more comfortable Moishseh take this on: How to convince a newbie to not act like an ATM when confronted by a cop who is determined to extract a thousand pesos from a motorist for a falsified motor vehicle infraccion. That has chased more tourists away from Mexico than ten thousand of my pointers on all the forums of RV'ing in Mexico, ever could. The number of "Never Again" newbies is astonishing. Education is prevention. Where are the folks who try and advise....hmmmm?
