Nacogdoches, tx to Atlanta

Traveling with 40' motorhome with toad. I20 looks like obvious route but posts say this is horrible in ms and la. Alternatives?

Expect to overnight in ms between Jackson and meridian. Don't see many alternatives. Just try a walmart?

Thanks for any ideas..

  • If you're intent on dropping down to I-10 just to visit New Orleans with a class A, I know I wouldn't, use I-59 to Tenaha(the locals say it as Tainahaw or Tanahaw, which ever of the 10 residents you speak to) and instead of continuing on 59, take 84 to I-49. If you continue on 84 from that point Coushatta is just up the road, a better place than Nawlins in my opinion.

However once on 49 follow to I-10 Lafayette and then east to BR(Baton Rouge). Plan your times carefully as BR can be bad with traffic, real bad during prime times. Also once on I-10 big truck traffic is a issue.

Once you're done with your visit use I-10 to Mobile and I-65 then I-85 to Atlanta.
  • After posting, we took a look at i10. Dw let me know she's always wanted to visit New Orleans. Looks like we head to i10 to get through la and ms. Returning to the west coast (wa state), i20 looks like a good option. Thanks for the reassurance and for the options on places to stay.
  • We have enjoyed staying at Askew's Landing near Edwards, MS several times. It would not be everyone's cup of tea: simple, quiet, rural setting with lake. When we were there no concrete (or asphalt) pads.

We have also stayed in Vicksburg at the Ameristar Casino campground--almost exactly the opposite setting, and at the Magnolia RV park.

On the other side of Jackson is Roosevelt State Park where we often stay.

Yes, there are some rough spots on I-20, but we have survived them many times.

Be sure to take the south loop (I-459) around Birmingham. We've never even had to slow down. We have enjoyed Tannahill State Park which is not far off I-459.

As for Atlanta--that depends on where you are going in the city. Our destination was usually Stone Mountain RV Park, so we went straight through on I-20 to the infamous loop 285. I can see where it gets its reputation, but we always made it fine by staying off the right hand lane until we were near our exit, sticking to our lane, and driving at highway speed--most will pass but that's ok.
  • IMO I-20 is not bad except going thru Shreveport and Monroe. Other than that it is good. Between Monroe and Vicksburg it is straight, smooth, and uneventful. Going thru Vicksburg is very rough, also.
  • I've gone up 59 and 259 to 20 and across. don't remember any big difference.
