We did the majority of our traveling on secondary roads with no issues for our 40' motorhome.
If you're not taking a towed vehicle for this long trip, I would highly suggest you do so for siteseeing. When we stop in an area we explore the surrounding area fully. We could not think of not doing it in a car. There are awesome good gravel roads to explore including miles and miles of secondary roads. Forest service campgrounds are terrific to use and are very scenic. Many have paved roads leading to them and even have paved sites, some with electric. Try them out when you're in the western states. Use your national Senior Pass for 1/2 off if you're 62+.
