If you want to have a pleasant ride, avoid the NY/NJ/BALT/WASH corridor and pick up 95 just south of richmond. Those aforementioned areas a pretty darn congested and it is especially true of rush HOURS. They don't get it that you cannot stop on a dime.
OR at very least do the balt/wash after 9 at night, on weekend or very early. FYI, we found out last year that going south on 95 (talking virginia/nc/sc/georgia) just after Christmas is not an original idea. Everyone else has the same idea. There were some 40 mile per hour slow downs due to the volume and just weird people. Oh, yeah, like the guy driving a small car with platform on the back...he had stuff shrink wrapped to that and the top and was going 40mph down route 95 (two lanes).
Enjoy your trip...we leave end of January.
