New Morelia Road

The new road is a straight shot from Patzcuaro to 15D, coming out north of the turn to go to Morelia. It looks complete, but wasn't open 2 weeks ago. Hopefully it will be in 6 more.

14-D starts 6km east of the east side entronque to Patzcuaro. From Morelia to Uruapan, the free road is Mex 37, from there it continues to La Mira on the cast to the entronque with Mex 200.

Any "new" highway north to Me 15, or Mex 15-D would have to run east around the lake on the Tzintzuntzan side or on the "Eronga" West side.

There was talk at one time to make the highway from Morelia to Patzcuaro a toll road. Shots were almost fired over that.

Haven't been up the hill in more than a year. Therefore I have zero info on new road construction.

Friends left Patzcuaro yesterday, got on the new road, paid the 96p toll (truck, two axle trailer) and drove for about 25 minutes. Then the new road ended, and their choices were Quiroga, Capula or Morelia. They went to Morelia and rejoined the old route. I don't know where, at least yet.

Where the new road meets 200D the road was not yet open.

It was not open in November for us, either.

Got my curiosity up talking about new roads so I looked on Google Earth for the road I was talking about . . . 20.43701 -103.54050 . . and it looks like they could be building a big loop around Guadalajara similar to the Arco Norte around Mexico City. The Image Date on GE is Feb. 2015 so probably further along. No idea what it is but looks like a big road. Could be a nice way around Guadalajara if you don't mind the extra miles.

On second thought - and second look - we did see new construction on the Patzcuaro end but I thought they were just modifying that intersection. We had a hard time with it as we were on 14D headed toward Morelia but want off at Patzcuaro to head up to Quiroga. The intersection was all messed up so we went up 14D a bit and did a Retorno. Never occurred to me that it was going to be a whole new road.

So I looked on Google Earth to see what appears to be the start of a new road around 19.532313 -101.555.775 with an Image Date of March 2015. Looking further up the road west of 43 on 15D there is a new road there too. I looked down that road a bit to 19.873700 -101.229026 where they appear to be building a new bridge with columns in with Image Date of February 2015.

Of course that is of no help in answering your question as we did not attempt to travel that road in either direction so have no idea if it is open yet. But thanks for letting us know as it could be of use to us one of these days. There are new roads being built all over Mexico but some of them seem to take quite a while to get finished. We travel between Jocotepec at the west end of Lake Chapala up to Guadalajara and have seen evidence of a new road being built which appears to be a continuation of the road that goes down to Manzanillo but I am not sure about that - just there has been indications of construction along one area there for at least several years - concrete bridge beams being built etc - but still no road ready to travel as far as I can tell. More and more new roads all the time.

It's there, but if you weren't looking for it, you might not have seen it. We've been watching it for several years, and again, this year it looked complete, even had signs.

No, the run around Morelia isn't bad anymore, however, a complete bypass would be very convenient.

About a month ago - maybe less - we traveled from 15D down 43 and around Morelia to 14 and on to Patzcuaro. Saw no indication of any other road along that route. Had not problem with that route. We saw no indication of construction that gave us hope of a new road. If there is a new road it may not be along the route we took.
