Colorado Roads

Headed out to Colorado this summer. Been there quite a few times.

Driving a 36ft Class A towing a Jeep.

Best routes for the following:

Leaving Glenwood Springs to Telluride

Telluride to Durango

RV parks?

Thx in advance.

    So true.

I must agree with the less skilled, the 1st 4 miles out of Ouray in the 25 mph zone is the most missed beautiful drive in Colorado.....
  • Ho boy, here we probably go AGAIN. I will only say this about the 550 south of Ouray. You might think it is safe for you but you do not - under any circumstances - have control over the driver coming the other way. I do not recommend it for RV.

Glenwood to Telluride most scenic route: CO 133 to US 50 to US 550 to CO 62 to CO 145. You can camp at Redstone in a USFS campground with electricity, dry camp at Marble in another USFS campground, camp at Ridgway State Park (one of our favorites with choice of FHU below dam or electric-only on Elk Ridge).

Telluride to Durango: there is really only one route--CO 145 to US 160. USFS Cayton cg with electricity south of Lizard Head Pass on CO 145 and/or McPhee Recreation Complex with electricity near Dolores (convenient for visiting Mesa Verde NP). Don't miss the Anasazi Heritage Center near Dolores!

    Excellent advice!

I get the feeling you're mocking people who think this route is not big-rig friendly. I really don't think it would be ridiculous, when recommending this route, to at least alert someone that it's not your average US highway.

On the one hand, I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone, especially in a big rig, who would just take a route recommendation without doing some double-checking. But on the other, what does it hurt to give them a heads up?

There's also CO-62 to US-550, which takes you through Ouray and Silverton, a truly spectacular drive. That's the way we got to Durango from Telluride in early September. We loved the USFS Sultan/Anvil Camping Areas just outside of Silverton.

X2, let the horror stories begin Hahaha

    ^^^^^Good Advice ^^^^^

Couple things you might enjoy along the Way - Maroon Bells - Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP - Marble - Crystal Mill - Ouray - Silverton - Lake City.

While these may in some cases be a little out of the way, all will give BIG rewards for the Effort to Explore and touch these special places.

When you leave Telluride - If you are able to jump off the road and get on the Gravel Forest Service roads you can be rewarded again.

Dunton and Lizard Head along with Alta Lakes are both exceptional areas.

Best of Luck, Hoping you have enough TIME to enjoy one of the really Beautiful Wild Places in the country.

    ^^^^^This

If Mesa Verde is on your itinerary, try to get a spot in Morefield CG inside the park. There's FHU sites as well as dry sites. Was at a FHU site in October, it was a great site, space between sites. Morefield has showers and fuel there (albeit expensive), is also convenient to the various cliff dwellings in the park. MV does require quite a bit of driving, hence the stay at Morefield being an advantage.

If you'll be wanting to stay in Durango, there's Lightner CG on the west side of town, or United Campground and Alpen Rose north of town. All get good reviews, both here as well as rvparkreviews.com. All are also convenient to the Durango & Silverton Train, if that's also on your agenda.
