Example: If you're at Colorado Springs, take 24 west to Buena Vista then south on 285 to Poncha Springs and pick up 50 west to Montrose then south on 550 to Ridgeway/Ouray. 550 at this point is practically flat. It's the part from Ouray to Durango that some folks don't like. (We happen to love it but then we've been driving the mountains a lot.)
There's a very nice state park at Ridgeway - Ridgeway State Park.
From Ridgeway take 62 and then 145 to Telluride (it offers a nice chairlift ride in summer) and 145 south to Cortez. (Mesa Verde Nat'l Park). Then 160 east to Durango.
145 is a LOT easier than 550 from Ouray.
I think Busskipper is having fun with your plans. He wants you to see everything in Colorado and for a good reason - it's a gorgeous state.

But Utah - Wyoming and Montana all have Eye Candy.
