If you travel through California on Interstate 80, I have a couple of suggestions for you:
1) Try to schedule you transit time through the Sacramento area before 3:00pm, as the west-bound I-80 traffic seems to increase dramatically after that. In my experience the heavy traffic starts around the I-80/CA68 junction just east of Roseville and extends for about 10 miles until just before the I-80/Business80 split. Also, there is a lot of construction on west-bound 80 after the split extending for 8-10 miles. Follow the signs for the designated "Through Traffic" lane and avoid the local freeway traffic congestion. It may become heavy again on the west side of Sacramento at the I-80/US-50 junction.
2) About the best time to drive what we call the Eastshore (I-80) Freeway through Berserkley toward Oakland is between 10:00am and 2:00pm.
I know these times conflict, but perhaps you may want to stop for a night west of Sacramento then schedule your drive to Oakland the following day so you get to the Eastshore Freeway at 10:00am or shortly thereafter. Driving through Sacramento in the early morning is another option. Driving time from Sacramento at say, the I-80/I-5 junction to Oakland is about an hour and 30 minutes on a good day. Of course, these times will vary depending upon the phase of the moon, variations in the lines of global magnetic forces, and the attitudes of our drivers.
Hopefully, other members who live in or near these areas can provide additional info if you need it. I live about a mile off the freeway in a little town you will pass on your way to Oakland, so wave as you go by.:D
I wish you a safe and enjoyable trip.
