Re. driving at night, yes, watch, but get in between the transport trucks and stay there. Their size is some protection from Moose. I had a record speed back from ferry to Corner Brook that way, so be prepared.

Make sure you book your ferry reservations when you decide.
Wifi on the ferry (nice perk). Nice enough restaurant meal.
Depending on what ferry you take (thinking of Port Aux Basques)
you will run out of light in May...we had maybe two hours to find
a spot to park for the night. WE made it to the campground in
Doyles (snow was predicted and this was a new vehicle/class C
for us). Do not drive in NL at night. Those
moose are BIG and dark like the night. We saw what they can
do to a minivan. I think our ferry was 11 -11:30 am.

We mostly dry camped.

Took the short ferry route over, and the long route back. Also take the ferry over to Labrador for a couple of days, very very cheap. I am ex navy so the ferry rides where oh-hum.

Time is not so much an issue as price. I did a fast estimate on cost difference, adding a generous amount for fuel & a few CGs to get back to the west port & doing the long ferry still costs over $400 more.

Tripalot is right about taking the shorter ferry trip.

Newfoundland and Labrador, a province abbreviated officially as NL, is sparsely populated and there are lots of places to tour and cgs or gravel pits to use on your return journey.

We crossed once to Argentia (long route). In those days the trip was 17 hours - said never again. The seas were very rough and most people were ill.
We prefer to take the shorter route. Going East we explore some of the penninsulas and coming back West, we do things we missed going East. This works out great for us - we take our time - camping cost is not a big issue and the fuel costs are cheaper than the extra cost of a ferry/berth/meals.

Argentia (where the "long" ferry departs), to Port aux Basque (for the "short" ferry) is almost 600 miles. Although it could be done somewhat quicker, we spent the equivalent of 2.5 days to make the return trip. Although TCH is a good road, it is still slower going than an Interstate route stateside. So I'd call it more than a day's trip. Besides, why rush??? 8^) ST
