NM US380 Carrizozo to Roswell

What might be the reason my trucker atlas shows this route restricted to commercial traffic between NM37 and NM246? (Right before Capitan. Looks like there might be a hill there but nothing shows in my Mountain Directory.

40 ft diesel pusher towing

thanks
  • I drove over that a month ago. Nothing there to worry about.
  • No commercial vehicles over 65' in length is what the signs say. It is a little curvy two lane but other than that it is a good road with no mountain passes. I think they just don't want big vehicles going through the town of Capitan and Lincoln . I see plenty of RV's traveling it. It is restricted from Carrizozo to hwy. 70 according to the sign.
  • It has been two years since we went up that route.

US-380 shows its age and wear more than US-70 to the south. But the hill between the NM-37 cutoff to Ruidoso and NM-48/246 in Capitan is minor compared to the hill coming up US-70 from Tularosa.

Capitan is a slow stretch if the weather is nice. Lot of folks walking along the roadway, and traffic trying to find a parking place for the Smokey The Bear Historical Park. Which is worth a stop.
  • I forgot, my neighbor triples it with his 27 ft 5th wheel and 19 ft boat.
  • It's a hill, I've towed it with no issues. 40 ft 5th wheel.
