personally, I'd take Nevada 95 over CA 99 any day unless it was snowing like crazy up on Donner Pass. Less traffic, less stress.
but if you decide on 99, there's nothing wrong with CA 58 over to Barstow.
There's a couple truck stops at Barstow just south of where you turn north to get to I 40. About 1 mile south.
