North Bay, Ontario

Would like some information about North Bay. How far is it from NY? Is it a good sized town? Are there camp grounds? Most of all what is there to see and do? Driving from NY to Sault Ste. Marie in June of 2015. Any "do not miss" along the route?
  • Granted I haven't been through that area since 2004, but back in the 70s I worked from Sudbury to well north of Wawa (130 mi. n. of The Soo)
Driving was a fringe benefit with all the interesting terrain.

Great area for stuff to see. Lakes, fishing, mines, Great expansion of population after World War II.

Agree more scenic going eastern way near Ottawa, Algonquin P. Park. Sault Ste. Marie area has some classic tourist sites, canal, locks, rail road trip (especially good in early fall) and other roads both north and south of the Trans Canada Highway. Espanola WWar II museum. Manitoulin Island, St. Joseph Island, etc. Check on current regulations re. use of crown land.

    Linger and enjoy.

  • From Buffalo it is about 5 hours drive. The town has abt 50k people, it is big enough to have all the important stuff ie Walmart, McDonalds etc. The route from Buffalo would take you thru Toronto, which has lots to do but the traffic during rush hour from Niagara Falls to Toronto to Barrie on the QEW/401/400 is horrible and weekend traffic on the 400 going up to cottage country from Toronto is quite busy too. If you can do it cross the border on the eastern side of NY across the St Lawrence River and drive up the Ottawa valley to Ottawa (our capital). It is a lot like DC with the museums and history (but obviously smaller and with a Canadian slant to it). From there go to Algonquin Provincial Park from the eastern Entrance (an absolute must do). I think the drive this route is much more scenic, less stressful and less traffic. Once you are in the North Bay area there are several really good Provincial Parks like Restoule. I really recommend doing the Provincial Parks in this area and avoiding RV parks. However once you get up around Algonquin, you are in the real north, there are no Starbucks and lots of Bears.
  • You can see the story of the Dionne quints. Last time I was there, years back, there was quite a poignant museum about them.

Otherwise, it's Northern Ontario -- hunting, fishing, and snow. Maybe some Poutine now.
  • Google is your friend and can answer ALL your questions...RV Park reviews will help with RV Parks. Ontario tourism website will help. Things to see and do? Well where in NY state are you starting from? Internet can answer all!
