If you want the easy way around San Francisco get on I5 or California 99 as far south as possible and go through the central valley.
Stay on the I5 and continue past Sacramento about 75 miles to hwy 20 and take that all the way to hwy 101.
Except for Sacramento this will be a very flat route except for the Grapevine section of 5/99 south of Bakersfield. Even this is not all that bad.
