Planning a 6 week trip out west this summer.
Heading to the Custer State Park area first.
I was wondering which route was the best to take.
Google Maps shows three pretty much equal distances and time for the Custer area from central NC.
One goes up north thru Chicago.
Southern route goes thru St Louis, Kansas City.
Which route has the best road conditions
leaving from say Charlotte, NC?
We are pulling a 31 ft fifth wheel.
Any help appreciated.
Need to understand more of the trip to really Contribute - When - Where else - Mission (Hikes - Photos - Check off the list...)
I have never driven within a Hundred Miles of Chicago, Once was more than enough to Teach me a Lesson, - TRAFFIC!
I am not a friend of St Louis or Kansas City - so we always recommend RT 36 through the center (Fly Over states) West of the Mississippi.
Last time we did I-80 or I-90 we could not get off soon enough - Traffic Trucks - Poor Roads ..........
So get back to us and we'll see if we can Help.

Hope this Helps - Best of Luck,
Thanks for all the replies and info. Our travel window is June 15th to August 8th at the latest. Our plan was to go to Badlands-Glacier-Yellowstone-Tetons. Our bucket list for the this trip was visiting the Badlands area and Glacier. The only firm dates in our travel window is the possibility of joining some friends in Cheyenne for a couple days during Frontier days at the end of July but that is not a have to. We keep our grandkids during the school year so our window is restricted this year and next year, We plan on going back several more times. Our intentions were to not make reservations too far ahead and be flexible. We have no problem dry camping. Only my wife and myself . traveling. Again many thanks for the replies.
