North to Alaska

Our first RV trip! Started with the idea of Anchorage being the destination and then heard about Valdez. Mostly doing site seeing and some sport fishing. Hope to meet some of you on the road during July and August. Any thoughts or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

  • And don't forget the best part of your trip to Alaska is the sights and sites you will see along the road!!

Ice Fields Parkway is a must. Top of the world and taylor highways are also worth the extra effort, plus you get to see Dawson City!
  • If by boat you mean the Alaska Ferry system, check the prices. It will vary by the length of the rig but will be thousands of dollars.

Just out of interest I have been using GOOGLE MAPS to follow the roads up to Anchorage from Montana. I almost think the best route would be to put your RV on a boat and head North... That surely would take away some 3-4 day straight driving journey by road. Looks like alot of the road is heading SW again for many many extra hours to get to Anchorage.

That would sure be a hugh undertaking for me but I guess that is the best part of the journey...

  • Valdez is one of our favorite cities! Highly recommend a day cruise with Capt. Fred on the Lulu Belle. Beautiful old boat and he is a hoot!
Make sure you go to Allison Point to see the bears one evening. Ask any of the tourists that have been there a couple days and they can tell you when to go.
Also Stan Stephens cruises are worth the time and money.
If you have the time and can find a camping spot Blueberry State Park on the way to Valdez located in Thompson Pass is a beautiful little park on a good rainbow and greyling lake.
    Have a GREAT trip!
  • The later in the summer you go to Valdez, the more rain you're going to get - but then you have to go when the fish are there. Check when the fish will be running for sure and go earlier rather than later.
