NorthGA: US 129 Around Cleveland GA

Heads up:
The bypass around Cleveland GA is fantastic. 4 lanes in a divided hwy with very little traffic, beautiful mountain views and easier to get to Unicoi or Vogel SPs.

If going to Unicoi, US 129 north and take the 75 Alternate north of Cleveland then right (south) on 75 in Robertstown and the first left to Unicoi. It'll help avoid the long traffic lines in Helen. Vogel is reached by just staying on US 129.

I-85 to I-985 north out of Atlanta was a breeze. Avoid doing 400 north out of Atlanta and trying to go through Dahlonega. Roads around Dahlonega are crowded now and only two lanes in most places. They've grown and with it comes heavy traffic. Add in their festivals once a month and you never when you'll hit traffic lines.

Glad they finally got it finished. If you are going to Vogel I would suggest staying on I-75 until north of Atlanta and then using I-575 and 515 to Blairsville and the south on 129 to Vogel. A little further but will not take any longer. I love 129 "over the mountain" but then I love curvy roads.

Have been both ways this year. Besides adding an hour to your trip (if you're lucky) I-575 is a no-go. Ton of standing traffic jams on that compared to I-985. 515 isn't a better choice either.

Forgot to mention that just before you hop onto the Cleveland bypass you have the intersection to Walmart. Very convenient for supplies before you get to the SPs.
  • If you do use 400 there is an alternate route to bypass Dahlonega. One is to go straight off the end of 400 to the next traffic light turn right toward Cleveland.

This strategy works if there is no baseball game!!!!
