Do you have a clear idea of where the route went? In some areas the 66 has had several different alignments. One alignment just west of Santa Fe (La Bajada) is difficult even with 4x4, and now is actually off limits to even hikers.

I'd suggest asking about modern route names, rather than depend on some 'old route 66' description.
In the 1930's an alternative was built that bypassed Santa Fe entirely (close to I40 between Santa Rosa and Albuquerque):
