On Hwy 37, Cassier Hwy, we stayed in Hazelton Ksan Campground 5/26-5/28...beautiful campground it is great to be up close and personal to huge mountains and right next to a large river. Every large campsite has a wonderful view. (Don't eat at the New Hazelton Cafe ... nuff said) Then on to Iskut at Mountain Shadow 5/29-6/1 ...A beautiful campground it is next to a mountain and a lake. Saw lots of wildlife. Had to stay an extra day to wait for the water to recede at Dease Lake when they lifted the road closure. (Thanks Gary for the Drivebc website and advice) Had some fog but made it through the narrow bumpy roads to Watson Lake. Be cautious of the one lane bridges. At Watson lake Baby Nugget 6/2-6/3 OK large pull through no sewer ... restaurant was good) the Signpost downtown Watson Lake was a treat!...also enjoyed the Northern Lights show.
In Whitehorse we stayed at Hi Country RV. 6/4-6/6 Kind of tight quarters for a 36' with toad but we were able to open our slide outs. Easy in and out. Overall very nice facility. Motorhome and car wash across the street (they do it) Made appt for 8:00 a.m. they did a beautiful job. Since this is our first trip up here, we didn't realize what the trip to the border would hold...we thought the roads would get better. big mistake. The roads were terrible, gravel flying everywhere and had to stay at 20mph in some long stretches. When we crossed the canadian border there is a 7-8 mile stretch before you reach the US Border with construction that is sort of a no man's land and areas were like a washboard...very unpleasant. They have a pilot truck that escorts you through it at a very slow rate of speed and only one direction of traffic moves at a time. The roads a much much better on the US side once you go through US customs. Went through about ll:00 am and there was little traffic.
We are now at Gakona RV Park Not fancy but large sites... has 50 amp full hookup. Has a river running behind it. Owner is very friendly and helpful. Going exploring today and heading tomorrow for Anchorage. Hope to stay at Richardson Fam Camp at the base, but they don't take reservations. Didn't see any campgrounds that had much to offer so we will take our chances. Will stay in Anchorage for 4-5 days then head for Seward ... our final destination for a month and a half.
Happy travels everyone!!
