Absolutely fantastic 7.5-hour Kenai Fjords tour today using Major Marine on a Toursaver coupon. Cloudy morning, but bright sun after lunch and mirror-like water with no swells. Photographed nesting puffins, murres, and kittiwakes, 3 bald eagles, 6 sea otters, an uncountable number of harbor seals lying on floe ice, a juvenile humpback separate from any pod, and sea lions. We even photographed a herd of mountain goats on a cliff above Resurrection Bay,
Also spent a lot of time with a pod of 4 humpback whales who were using coordinated group fishing. All 4 whales would hit the surface at the same time with mouths open, driving small fish or krill ahead of them. We even knew where they would be just before they surfaced because the gulls would quickly gather at the exact spot where the whales were located.
My third boat trip to Kenai Fjords in 21 years and by far the best wildlife experience I have ever had. Better than either of my past bus trips in Denali, but then that's a whole different type of wildlife.
And, as a bonus, I got some great glacier-calving video and geology photos. Greatest day yet of our month on the road! And this weather could last another week, according to the Anchorage TV forecaster yesterday.
