We are in Fairbanks and headed for Tok, Chicken, and Dawson City in the next few days. Just spent 3 hours at the UAF Museum of the North--first time there in 40 years. Great museum with a different emphasis than the terrific Anchorage Museum. Went to Pioneer Park yesterday--free yet!--and enjoyed the riverboat Nenana dioramas and the small Air Museum. The dioramas are of towns along the Yukon visited by the Nenana, including tiny villages I visited in 1972 like Tanana, Galena, and Ruby. Apparently the Air Force pulled out of Galena in the mid-1990s, so it is a mostly Athabaskan village now.
The Air Museum was tiny, but full of interesting exhibits on Ladd Field during WWII. Lots of photos of P-39's, P-38's, and other planes having their American insignia being painted over with red stars before the Russian pilots took over to fly them to Siberia.
