I enjoyed Valdez Gold Rush days also! I love all the "our town" celebrations throughout Alaska. I stayed in Bayside RV park for 3 nights and the city campground for 1 night.
Haines is known for the eagles, and you should see them along the river as you are driving into town. The run of pink salmon has been extraordinary this year and I'm sure the eagles are feasting - and probably the bears too.
I've only been there once, in a truck not an RV, so I don't have info to share on camping there. As I recall, the city streets are narrow, with lots of cars parked on them.
