ontario to east coast

Hi we are planning a trip from ontario to east coast in mid august . thinking about crossing at Gananoque & going to maine & maybe taking ferry to nova scotia? Then tour from there. we have 2 weeks , any input would be great.
  • Great info, trying to decide whether to spend more time in the states or canada. It looks like this area will require several trips.
    Thanks guys

Ferry closure: Wrong. The ferry was closed because the province of Nova Scotia discontinued it's subsidy.

But there are talks under way to find a way to reinstate the ferry

-- To Maine Coast. From Montreal to Sherbrooke to Island Pond, to Showhegan to Bangor to Bar Harbour. Take route 1. Enjoy. I used to own harbour frontage near Lubec, ME.

You might want to walk up Mt. Washington, too.

    :C
  • Sounds like a great trip. When we came over Wellesley Island, we went up over the lake on 11 to Burlington, VT. From Burlington you could take either 89 to 93 to 101 to the NH coast and start up through Maine there or take 2 across VT, NH and Maine to Bangor.

If you start at the bottom of Maine, see Portland and Freeport. LL Bean is great. Then Boothebay Harbor and then Bar Harbor. If you took rt 2 across you'll be here in Bar Harbor. You could spend a lot of time doing things in Acadia National Park. Swimming , hiking Whale watching etc.

Then a drive up the Maine coast to Eastport. From there you can take a ferry to Deer Island and another ferry to St George. Backtrack a little to St Andrews or skip the island and just go direct to St Andrews.

The Bay of Fundy and the entire NB coast is beautiful. Moncton has the reversing falls. PEI is nice and they have a ton of Potato fields. If you have time, Cape Breton is wonderful.

There is a ferry from St John over to Digby or Yarmouth. The Halifax area including Peggys Cove is great.

When you firm up your trip we can offer suggestions on CG's.
  • Yeh, no ferry but I think I still would like to drive up the coast from maine to new brunswick . Then nova scotia & pei & back looking into camping along way & stuff 2 15 year old boys would enjoy. any advice.
    Thanks

Might want to take a look at how you would cross NY from Gananoque, there are no GOOD East/West roads.
I just took a similar trip (from Toronto) and drove by Montreal, Sherbrooke, eventually crossing into Maine at St-Augustin-de-Woburn.
Pretty drive in Maine, but watch out for moose!
