Our Civilized Alaska Ferry Schedule

We spent a lot of time figuring out our Alaska Ferry schedule which did NOT have early AM departures or arrivals. If we changed the departure date by one week, the entire schedule would change dramatically. I think tides, currents, etc. changing from week to week could make a difference.

We made the reservation in Nov 2013 for a May 17, 2014 departure from Prince Rupert.

Anyway, we needed a room for only the 23-hr Ketchikan->Sitka leg. All the other legs were reasonably short and in the daylight.

If you're making a ferry plan, play around with it. Look at the following to see what was possible then. No telling what the moon has in store for tides and currents whenever you want to go.

Our 2014 Ferry Schedule.
  • In Haines, we met my cousin and his wife who "drove around" and had a great 2 1/2 weeks of touring with them until we split up. Thus, the need for a ferry schedule.

The best piece of ferry advice I've had from this forum was to spend lots of time in Sitka. We upped our stay to 4 nights but will stay longer next time.
  • Civilized ? Plan ?
We did it making only reservations on the fast ferry between Petersburg- Juneau & Juneau - Sitka.
Spent what ever time we wanted at each port, then the day before we wanted to leave we'd go to the terminal and get the next day ferry out. I wanna do it AGAIN !

    Route... Prince Rupert-Ketch-POW-Ketch-Wrangle-Petersburg-Juneau-Sitka-Juneau-Skagway.
  • Several years ago we traveled the Inside Passage by ferry. We were told that the entire schedule was based on the tide between Ketchikan and Petersburg. Apparently that is the area that is most crucial for having the maximum water under the ships.
