Great report on the Baja. We mostly travel the rest of Mexico and can more or less report the same. On our trip this year we crossed at Laredo heading for Oaxaca. Stopped a couple days in San Miguel de Allende. Then Puebla (Cholula) for a couple days. Then Oaxaca for a couple weeks. Then Patzcuaro for a week. Valle de Juarez for 10 days or so. Jocotepec (Roca Azul) for a few weeks. Guanajuato for a week. Now San Miguel de Allende again for a couple weeks. Ditto the rest of the Baja report - no problems - friendliest people - best food - etc etc etc.
Water report - we have installed a UV water purification system for our drinking water - as well as coconut shell charcoal taste and odor filters - our drinking water is better than bottled water and safe to drink wherever we go. Details?
http://www.h2osplashwaterfilters.com/ulvistun.html . . . this UV system for drinking water only (1gpm) costs $105US
https://www.filtersfast.com/P-Hydronix-SMCB-2510-Water-Filter.asp . . . this coconut shell charcoal 0.5 micron filter fits most standard 10" canisters and is the best taste and odor I have been able to find - $9US
Many places in Mexico have safe drinking water but we use our own system wherever we go in North America just to be sure. UV is now standard in many water treatment plants and is used to purify bottled water. Our system is a mini water treatment plant / water purification plant - for under $150US. We have no idea what the bottled water places use to purify their water - we do know what our water is.
ON EDIT - Several years ago in Yucatan a few gas station attendants tried to pull one over on us but we caught them. We have not had another bad experience but they do happen. You still have to always watch them. The vast majority are honest but you can run into a bad apple anywhere in the world you might travel. We pay attention no matter where we go.
