I think we've all been duped. With all the technology, science, and affordability, there should be no reason tap water isn't safe. Sad situation.
Quite a few years ago there was some sort of debate about bottled water and tap water in the US. They did a lot of tests and the conclusion was that New York City tap water was the safest water you can drink. Lots of bottled water tested bad.
BUT - today we watch the new from Los Angeles because we get LA news on our satellite dish - it seems not a week goes by that they don't have a major water main break - flooding whole neighborhoods. Pipes have been in the ground for a very long time. Infrastructure is breaking down all over the place. I once lived in a town up in the mountains outside Boulder, CO where they still had wooden water mains. Infrastructure. How do you replace every water main in Los Angeles County?
I do not know about water treatment in Mexico - or much of anywhere else. Back in the 70s I worked construction in CO and we built a couple of water treatment plants as well as sewer treatment plants. The water comes in one side of town taken out of the river and is treated and then used by the town residents etc. It then goes to the sewer treatment plant where it is again treated and then put back in the river. Then it flows downstream to the next town and goes through the process again. Think about it. All the towns down all the rivers with sewage going in and out of the river.
Sometimes - no matter where we are - the demand on the treatment plant is so great they can't treat enough water to meet demand throughout the day. Which is why we were building new plants in CO. But just as they can't seem to keep up with the roads they can't keep up with all the demands increased population puts on all these systems. I am sure everyone knows about water tanks that we see way up in the air all over the US - there are tanks on hills outside town in many cases. In Mexico we see individual tanks on rooftops everywhere. In New York City if you pay attention when they show shots in TV shows or movies where you can see rooftops you will still see lots and lots of very old wooden water tanks on tops of buildings all over NYC. All of these tanks whether for the entire town or individual buildings will fill when demand is low and supply when demand is high. Lots of tanks fill late at night and then drain down during the day. Some of these tanks are very old.
So you may have the world's greatest water treatment plant with the latest technology sending the world's purest water out of that plant. Then it goes to all kinds of antiquated systems and can become contaminated. And of course there are those times when the demands can't be met and some untreated water gets into the system.
Today's most modern water treatment plants are using things like UV and RO to provide clean water. So we have several filters in our RV as well as a small drinking water only UV system (just like those bottled water treatment plants use - and what modern treatment plants use - people don't like chlorine anymore). We know we go lots of places where the water is just fine. We also go places where the water is not that great. This could be anywhere - not just talking about Mexico. So we have our filters and UV and we use them all the time. No worries.
