Out of the Baja and yes I am still alive

After 3 plus months and over 3400 miles driven in the Baja on every kind of road and track with my 32 foot trailer I can safely report that:

We had absolutely NO problems of any kind (being well traveled all over the world we didnt expect any)

We were treated with respect and very politely by the young soldiers at all military checkpoints...are you listening US Customs?

The few interactions we had with the police were entirely positive, and it was plain that they were just not interested in hassling tourists.

Despite the moaning of so many of my Canadian friends Mexico is still very cheap.

The RV parks were doing very good business.

The roads are NOT as bad as the books and the naysayers want you to believe.

Pemex stations almost without exception have all computerized pumps and cannot be fiddled with. The vast majority also take debit and credit cards.

Contrary to the reports by the Churches in their book and other reports, Gas station attendants were friendly and professional. On the few occasions we did use cash for gas they often gave us MORE change than we had coming. In other words if the centavos were due them they rounded in our favor. No cheating or even a hint at it anywhere.

We filled our tanks with Mexican water and used it for washing and other things sometimes we made coffee with it. We never had a problem.

We ate at every kind of establishment from fine dining restaurants to small street stalls...we were never ill.

We had a great time in a beautiful place with great and friendly folks most of which were the Mexicanos. Unfortunately we found that too many of our fellow RV'ers were just grumps, complaining endlessly and just plainly unhappy. Go back home.

The food was great , the people better, the Todos Santos Music Festival rocked, the scenery was spectacular the weather was unbeatable.

Dont listen to the endless naysayers and fear mongers who lurk here to scare you away. It's easy, safe and a great drive.

I've heard my entire life (as most have) about bad Mexican water - Montezuma's revenge - that stuff. Is that true? Is some of the water bad.. most of it.. what?

What IS true is that some of it tastes pretty terrible and makes a terrible cup of tea or coffee - but that is no different to water out of the tap in some pretty large desert areas of the USA. In Baja we bought water for the only time in ten years of travelling through 30 countries and that was not because of health concerns, but because of the taste.

We've got over 40 trips to Mexico. The only time we got sick there is when everyone at work was sick with the flue and I think it just caught up to us when we happened to get to Mexico.

Most of the people I see down there that get sick are about four to five days into being there. They've been drinking way to much, usually drunk every night and they're usually badly sunburned. I think their body just revolts as it should.

As for the water, I have to laugh at that. The people that order bottled water to drink in a restaurant because they don't dare drink the local water - well what do they think the glass was washed in that they poured the bottled water into and then the ice they poured the water over??? Or the plate their food is served on, or the fork they're eating off of?

These are usually the same people that are scared to drink water our of their RV holding tank and then take a shower in water from their holding tank. But yet they washed their coffee cup in soap water and then rinsed it in water from their holding tank...........

  • Yep, that has been my experience also. I am glad to hear that others are coming away with a positive experience. JH
  • So thrilled to read reports like this on the Baja, as it's on our radar big time to spend some serious time down there. Hope a lot more folks will post more like this :) Thanks 4X4Dodger.

Always got a chuckle out of those that would NOT drink the water but needed ice in their drinks :H

Use to go bird hunting south of Mexicali. Drank the same water as the farmers and what was offered in restaurants wherever we stopped.

Drank some water in USA that was worst.....and it was regulated/certified/EPA blessed :S
