- spacedoutbobExplorerBeautiful drive, it scared my friend more than myself, I was driving. I also went on to Vernal from Torrey.
Bob - padredwNomadRemains one of our favorite drives in the United States. I highly recommend it.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIWe've done it often with our 40' MH. Have a good trip!
- CloudDriverExplorerWe have done route 12 twice (once in each direction) and wouldn't think twice about doing it again. There are some sections of steep grades, but they are short, not mile after mile. Everyone drives slow across the hogsback section and it's really just like driving on any other 2 lane road. There are a couple of pull outs, so the driver can take a look.
There are two RV Parks in Torrey. We prefer Thousand lakes.
Pictures of the hogsback - Bull_RiderExplorerWe just did this route for the first time last week. Drove from Bryce Canyon N.P. to Torrey, then east on 24 through Hanksville to Goblin Valley.
This road is fantastically beautiful if you like rock formations and vivid colors. Breathtaking. In fact, it's difficult to concentrate on the road with scenery that is so stunning.
We pull a 30' bumper pull that weighs in at about 8200 pounds loaded for camping with a Dmax diesel crew cab pickup. I never felt like we didn't have enough power, but there are some significant uphills and down grades.
At times I was down in first gear with the Allison auto tranny, just to keep from heating up the brakes. On the uphills I would ease off of the fuel and let the truck work its way up the grade. We had no problems.
This is a pretty good road, not a lot of traffic, adequate pull offs, and I would drive it again without hesitation.
The hog back section on top is kind of weird, like driving along a suspended causeway, I didn't care much for that part. But it's only about a mile so no big deal.
This road will tax your brakes and engine, and your driving skill set, but at the end you get a Merit Badge in Mountain Driving so it's all good.
If you have some experience with mountain roads with steep grades (10% and more) then you should be fine. Just take your time.
