You can get a passport in one day provided you have the necessary documents (birth cert, ss card). Make an appointment and pay for it.

Live near Nogales. They will not stop your return with a pictured ID, State Drivers License. They will give you a hard time but WILL let you pass.

I would most strongly recommend getting a passport/passport card.

If anything, crossing the border without one will become more difficult in the next few months.

Having a valid passport means never having to worry about rule changes - because you have the 'gold standard' document to verify your citizenship and right to enter the US.

Now, as one who has crossed at Progresso a few dozen times - if you don't have time to get a passport - drive down to the border crossing and walk over to the US Customs Border Patrol Office and talk to them. They will be the ones with final definitive word about the documents you do have and their acceptability at that location.

There's the answer. If you don't have a passport you may be delayed while your citizenship is verified, but they will allow you in anyway. The WHTI is just that, an initiative, it does not overwrite the US Constitution which guarantees your return to US soil to US Citizens

What is the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)?

WHTI is the joint Department of State (DOS) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plan to implement a key 9/11 Commission recommendation and the statutory mandates of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA). IRTPA, in part, required the DHS and DOS to develop and implement a plan to require all travelers, U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike, to present a passport or other acceptable document that denotes identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same U.S. port) are able to enter the United States with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. Please be aware that you may still be required to present a passport to enter the countries your cruise ship is visiting. Check with your cruise line to ensure you have the appropriate documents.

my cousin did as the guy's wife above and the agent told her to bring her passport next time or there won't be a next time.

My wife has been across 3 times and gave them her drivers lic and she said she left her passport in Calif. No problem what so ever

Passport is the safest. Birth certificate(original). Call a business called "Vagabundos" located in Rio Vista Calif. and ask them. They run expeditions,tourist caravans all the time.
