Highway 3 between Cranbrook and the Okanagan is a decent road. I prefer this route when traveling to the coast.
If you want to go through Nelson you could use Highway 3A which has a free ferry across Kootenay Lake. It is a bit slower along the lake than taking Kootenay Pass between Creston and Salmo but I find Nelson is an interesting place to visit.
