La varsas San blas Tepic

Has anyone travelled up or down here recently that could tell me how it would be towing a 30ft or so fifth wheel
The person driving is having concerns with steep hills and his truck and this seems his best option
He thinks his clutch fan is a problem
Thank you

  • I suspect if you take it slow you shouldnt have any problems. The detour isnt more than a mile and speed won't be an issue.

  • Hmmmmm The gravel bit is a bit concerning; We're in a DP at 27,000 pounds GVW towing car. We did the Top of the World highway in Alaska some years ago, partially through the river bed on the way up from Tok and managed fine we thought. However the gravel did a bit of damage underneath to the air suspension.
  • We just drove the San Blas section north last week and is a flat, easy to drive road up to Hwy 15. The San Blas end has some pot holes and rough sections but is not a problem if you take it easy. The biggest problem right now is construction on the highway on the north side of Villa Hidalgo. You have to take a detour to the right going North about halfway through town, cross an irrigation canal and take a rough gravel road around the construction section. We saw no detour signs or flagmen to help you. Buses take the route so its doable, but I would suggest asking someone in town how to get to the bridge across the canal and then onward. I was towing a 30 ft fifth wheel.

  • My neighbours, Tallyho69 are right. From San Blas to Tepic is a serious grade. Not only that, the road is narrow with lots of overhanging trees.

We have no recent knowledge of the road conditions on this route but we used to use it regularly in a 30' gas Class A motorhome (widebody) towing a Chevy tracker:

From the intersection of the road from Las Varas and the Tepic-San Blas road, turn LEFT towards San Blas(instead of right towards Tepic) Just across the bridge, turn RIGHT towards Guadalupe Victoria. On the Guia Roji it's a yellow road but it used to be quite good. Depends on what Manuel did to it. (Actually, we wouldn't mind finding out how the road is this year, will go that way if not washed out!) This is flat all the way. Watch out for vados (dips in the road to allow flood water to clear).

Don't know where he is but there are very competent mechanics in Mexico, particularly in the big cities. For instance, I'm sure he could get it attended to in Puerto Vallarta.

From Guadalupe Victoria turn right, through Villa Hidalgo and on to the libre. Follow the libre until you can connect to the toll road.

At the little village of Matachén, (before San Blas) don't miss the shops along the road selling the most magnificent banana bread and other goodies. Just watch out for the jejenes (tiny biting flies!)
