Planning a trip around Christmas, ad hoc or reservations?
Definitely planning to head south. Maybe through NC/SC to visit some friends, maybe all the way into FL. How full do the campgrounds get? Can you do it without reservations?

Many snowbirders leave their home for Florida right after Christmas. Also, after Christmas is usually the school break time. If your travels are before Christmas I think you'd find spots without reservations - except at Disney World. :)
