Preferred Route from Va Beach to Myrtle Beach

Is taking 17 a better route to take? We took 95 last year over to 40, then down, but was thinking of taking 17 all the way down this year. Not familiar with 17 though. Anyone with experience traveling 17 that can tell me how this route is? Any construction or two lane roads, or is 17 primarily a 4 lane highway all the way down? TIA

  • We did 17 once on our annual golf trip from NJ to MB - it's not bad, if I remember but obviously slower than 95. Once south of the VA line it's much less dense and built up, obviously. The other alternative might be 301 which parallels 95 much of the way down there. Again, like 17, it will be the Mayberry RFD road, but there are certain charms to that.
  • Before I-95 was built, we always used US-17 between Myrtle Beach and our district headquarters at Hampton. Except we didn't take 17 through the Dismal Swamp to Norfolk, as US-13 through Suffolk was a better route to Hampton, avoiding the densest part of the Norfork-Chesapeake area.
  • We dislike 95, and for that reason alone almost always take 17 to Myrtle and beyond on our annual snowbird migration from Maine to Florida. The worst part of the whole trip from VA Beach to MB is the first few miles until clear of the Norfolk area traffic.
