Most of the main roads have some type of surfacing like asphalt or other styles of pavement. Yes, there is stretches that have some pavement issues.
No, additional protection is needed.
I have installed some 1/4 inch hardware cloth behind my grill. This keeps small stones and insects from hitting the radiator.
